Based on my professional experience as a CranioSacral Therapist of over 15 years, Intensive Sessions (80 minute sessions) of Craniosacral Therapy are ideal to help the body start the process of healing, relaxing and moving. I rarely see clients more frequently than once per week because the body needs some time after a session to “re-boot” (to use computer terminology) and reorganize the structures of the body as well as the nervous system’s control of these structures. In contrast to other therapy approaches that market their therapy on a packaged protocol, I believe in a process of “systems analysis” (i.e. assess, re-assess, and re-assess) as a treatment program goes along. The question of “how many sessions will it take” is very individual and often tempered by a client’s financial and time resources as they influence that person’s health through stress, etc. To provide myself and the client the opportunity to “budget” for their treatment program, I usually suggest an initial 3 sessions spaced approximately one week to 10 days apart in order to judge what changes to the person’s original complaints occur. (I invite you to consider these factors when scheduling your initial session.)
Once the body and nervous system begins to regulate, the integration of other hands-on treatments are introduced to assist in structural rebalancing of the muscles/tissue.
Ultimately, I believe that the therapist’s responsibility is not only to provide treatment sessions, but to teach clients self-treatment and self-care techniques between sessions in order to support and enhance the benefits of any treatment session(s)!
